– INTERVAL –

Il delirio amoroso, HMV 99

The first half of the programme features a selection of arias from different sources which, when put together, trace the emotional journey of a woman in love. She begins a jealous lover who hopes to find pleasure in truth, but is frustrated by an inconstant love. Finding herself lost in a metaphorical dark forest, she wrestles with self-doubt and the realisation that she may never be loved. After the interval we perform Handel’s dramatic cantata, Il delirious amoroso, which tells the tale of Chloris’ love for Thyrsis and how it is rescued from the depths of Hell to delight in the Elysian Fields.
